Doug Leland

Though a Vermonter by birth, I entered the Naval Academy from Longmeadow, MA. Following graduation with a BS in Portuguese (one of a very few in the world with such a distinction) I served for just under six years as a SWO, followed by almost twenty years in the healthcare field and then another 20 years with my own practice as an Executive Coach.

After fifteen years in Coronado, CA, and tiring of the perfect 75-degree cloudless days, Sally and I moved to Freeport, Maine, where we have enjoyed the woods, water, tranquility, and somewhat cooler temps since 2013.

We have both contributed years of volunteer service to the town of Freeport, with most of my efforts focused on improving the active transportation infrastructure in town and surrounding areas. Sally enjoys long distance backpacking and I enjoy long distance off-road cycling. We’re both enjoying more travel opportunities of late and after more than 50 years of marriage we continue to enjoy the company of each other.

My primary reason for accepting the gracious invitation to participate in the Gulf-2-Goat Ride is to support this endeavor and to encourage other classes to consider exceptional public service and memorial projects that contribute to the missions of USNA, the Brigade and the Alumni Association. As living alumni, I believe we have a responsibility to carry forward the memories of those who have gone before us ... and, as alumni, we have a responsibility to set an example for those who will follow.
